</->
The Internet is an excellent source for those who are either unemployed and looking for a job or those who are employed but are looking for a new job. It is also a great source for those who are looking to change careers. However, with so many job search websites out there and literally thousands of jobs posted online every day the process of finding a job online can seem extremely daunting. Job seekers may be unsure of where to start their job source. They may also not understand how to apply for jobs online. Fortunately it is not very difficult to find a job online if the job seeker knows what they are doing. This article will provide practical tips for those who wish to find a job online.

The best tip we can offer for job seekers who are hoping to find a job online is to be persistent. This is one aspect in which searching for a job online is no different than searching for a job through more traditional methods. It is unrealistic to expect your dream job to be just sitting there waiting for you the minute you log onto your first job search website. It is certainly possible that you will get lucky and this will happen but it is not likely. For this reason you should be prepared to spend a great deal of time searching for jobs online before you find the right job. You should also be prepared to not be hired for the first opportunity you find.

Competition for jobs offered online is very high especially in today’s economy with the unemployment rate so high. For every job posted online there may be hundreds, if not thousands, of applications from highly qualified candidates. For this reason it is very important to make a really good first impression with your application materials. This may include your resume, cover letter and any other forms required by the potential employer. You should make sure all of these materials are free of errors, highlight the necessary skills you possess and really highlight the reasons why you are a well qualified candidate for this particular job. Resumes and cover letters should not be generic. Instead they should always be tailored specifically for the position the job seeker is applying for.

It is also very important to realize that just because a job search is being conducted online it does not mean the job seeker can be too casual in his approach to applying for open jobs. He may be able to search for jobs from his home office and in his pajamas but all communication with potential employers should be completely professional. It may be tempting to take a more relaxed approach when sending emails to a potential employer because emails are not usually as formal as other types of communication. However, during the process of a job search you should avoid doing this because it is not considered an acceptable practice and it may result in you not being seriously considered for a job you really want.

When searching for jobs through online resources it is very important to be creative in your thinking. Years ago when job seekers relied almost exclusively on newspapers for job advertisements it was fairly easy to scan all of the available job openings. However, with the sheer magnitude of job openings posted online this is simply not possible. For this reasons job seekers have to really know how to find jobs for which they are well qualified. Searching for jobs by title, keyword and skills are all useful practices. Most job seekers forget to use keywords related to the job they are seeking and their skill set but doing this may result in the job seeker missing out on a lot of opportunities. Becoming a little more creative in your thinking, noting important keywords used in the type of job advertisements that interest you and applying these keywords to your own job searches will result in greater success in your online job search.

We are in the most difficult job environment most of us have seen in our working lives. Every day you hear of another major company planning to lay off more workers. It’s not a pretty picture, but if you are one of those people who have been effected by this economy, you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and make finding your next job your highest priority. You have to take charge of the situation and not sit around feeling sorry for yourself. Here are seven things that can help focus your efforts to help achieve the goal of find that next position.

1. Finding your next job is a full-time job. Do not get distracted because you are at home.

2. Update your resume. Even if you are well known in your industry, you need to have an up-to-date resume available that you can e-mail or send when you need to. Put your e-mail address on the resume, your cell phone number, and make sure all your dates are correct.

3. Have a positive outlook. Do not be embarrassed about being out of work, especially in this environment. You need to hold your head high and be confident in yourself and your abilities.

4. Be organized. As you follow up with leads, and network with people you know in the industry, you have to find a way to keep track of this information. Also, by making daily to-do lists, you can keep track of what you are accomplishing and where you are spending or wasting your time.

5. Keep yourself presentable. Make sure you get that hair cut, when you need it, and have the best outfit ready for interviews. Looking your best will help make the right impression, when that important interview comes along.

6. Know what you want to do and where you are willing to do it. Job seekers need to be able to articulate what they are looking for, the flexibility they have in considering other industries, and if they are willing to move for the right opportunity.

7. Get an accurate understanding of your finances. You need to know how much you have in your bank account, and how much you can access through credit lines. You need to determine what expenses have to be paid, and what expenses can be delayed or renegotiated without harming your credit. The rule used to be that you should have at least six months of expenses in a savings or money market account for emergencies, but most people do not have that discipline.

We have no way of knowing how long this troubled economy will last before we turn the tides and see a resurgence in the business environment. What we do know from history is that down cycles last for six months to a year or so, and then things start turning around, sometimes very quickly. Even in down cycles, there are always industries that are hiring.

In fact, when one opportunity ends, another that could be even better may be the one you find. Remember, Walt Disney got fired from his job doing cartoons for the Kansas City Journal, and filed for bankruptcy, and that was the only reason he wound up in Hollywood.
